What is an ITIN?
An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a unique identifier assigned by the Internal Revenue Service for tax processing purposes. It is issued to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are ineligible to obtain a Social Security Number from the Social Security Administration. The ITIN is a nine-digit number starting with the number 9, and the fourth and fifth digits can range from 50 to 65, 70 to 88, 90 to 92, and 94 to 99.

How does one apply for an ITIN?
- Applicants should fill out a W-7 application form and submit it to the IRS along with a completed tax return.
- Applicants should submit documents to the IRS verifying their “foreign status” Identity along with W7 and complete set of tax return.
- Applicants can apply through an Acceptance Agent (AA) – AOTAX is authorized by the IRS to help the applicant complete and file the W-7.
- Applicants can apply in person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC)
- When the ITIN application is approved, the ITIN letter is sent to the applicant address as mentioned in the tax return via mail.
